Sixth Street speed limit to change
July 27, 2006
Speed limits are set to change today on Sixth Street between Ames and High streets. The majority of the street will go from 20 mph to 30 mph, with the exception of a four-block area.
District votes to fund SRO

The Baldwin Board of Education moved one step closer to funding a School Resource Officer Monday night. The school board voted 5-0 to set aside $29,000 in their budget this year for the SRO. That money will pay for 50 percent of the salary, benefits and training of the SRO. The City of Baldwin City will pay the other half.
Coaches, players learn at camp

Many football teams begin to prepare for the fall season with summer camps that teach the players the offensive and defensive schemes for the upcoming season. Baldwin Junior High School coach Tom Harman does things slightly different. He takes the new schemes from the Baldwin High School football team and uses those for his teams.
BHS hires volleyball coach

A long, exhaustive search for a Baldwin High School volleyball coach ended for Activities Director Gary Stevanus Monday night. The Baldwin Board of Education approved Kelly Brown, a 1994 Ottawa High School graduate, as the new BHS volleyball coach.

4-H a nice niche for Nottinghams

Baldwin City’s Braxton, Conner and Paris Nottingham are carrying on their family tradition of 4-H, which began with their grandparents. All three children of David and Jeanne Nottingham are following in their parents’ footsteps, just as their parents did years ago. “My parents and brothers were in 4-H, so it was the thing to do,” David said. “I grew up on a dairy farm, so I primarily showed dairy cattle. Jeanne showed horses and our kids have done cattle, sheep, horses, dogs and cats. They have also done cooking, clothing buymanship and all sorts of things.” Barbara Coggburn, Jeanne’s mother, joined 4-H in 1943 when she became old enough. “I think when I joined 4-H, you couldn’t join until you were 10 years old,” Coggburn said.

The 99th annual Vinland Fair on Aug. 10, 11 and 12 will offer the community the traditional array of features including an ice cream making and eating contest, a display of wacky scarecrows, and three competitions based on tractors.

Candlelight vigil scheduled for Schroeder-Ebel

A candlelight vigil is scheduled for Shana Leigh Schroeder-Ebel, a Baldwin City resident who died Saturday. The vigil will be Friday at 7 p.m. at Baldwin Junior High School.
