BHS JV, freshman boys add league wins
The Baldwin High School junior varsity and freshman boys' basketball teams each added a win Tuesday, when they both beat Prairie View.
The JV boys won 59-38, after leading 36-13 at halftime.
Sophomore Zach Durr led the team with 14 points. Sophomores Jesse Green and Josh Beaulieu each added 10 points.
The freshmany boys were victorious 45-31. Sam Beecher led the Bulldogs with 20 points. Brandon Tommer and Clad Kueffer added 10 and nine points, respectively.
Last weekend, the freshman boys were plagued with turnovers as they faced Anderson County twice and Spring Hill, losing all three.
Their first loss was against Anderson County at home, 51-31. Baldwin suffered from 39 turnovers, 10 for 56 shooting from the field, and were out rebounded 63-24.
Beecher was the leading scorer with seven points and Logan Schiller lead the boys in rebounds at six.
On Saturday the Bulldogs headed to Spring Hill for a two-game tournament. In the first round, they lost to Spring Hill 43-31.
They shot 13 for 46 from the field, were out rebounded 47-22, and lost the ball 29 times. The leading scorer was Tommer with 10 points, while Cody Kruger grabbed five rebounds.
In the second round, they received their last defeat against Anderson County, losing 42-30.
The biggest problem for the Bulldogs was the 43 turnovers that they committed. They made seven of the 13 free throws and were 11-42 from the field.
When it came to rebounding, they got beat 55-34. Top scorers were Beecher and Kueffer, who each claimed seven. Blake Shields had the most rebounds at six. The freshman boys' record now stands at 3-9.
The JV boys are on a roll after winning their last four games and claiming the Santa Fe Trail tournament title on Saturday.
Friday night they swept past Anderson County, winning 79-59. Beaulieu led with 21 points and Durr put up 19. For the juniors, Kueffer snatched seven rebounds while Michael Giarraputo claimed five steals. Sophomore Dustin Schiller dished out 12 assists.
In the first round of the Santa Fe Trail Tournament, the Bulldogs beat Basehor-Linwood 52-46 Saturday. Schiller was all over the court as he scored 10 points, stole the ball four times and led with nine assists. Beaulieu had the most points at 11 and Green attained six rebounds. Junior Cory Lauridsen helped out with four steals.
The second round went smoothly as the Bulldogs claimed first place against Spring Hill, 63-50.
Durr had a hot hand as he went on to score 28 points, and he was followed by Green with 12 points and six rebounds. Schiller dished out five assists for his teammates. The JV boys now have a record of 9-3.
