BHS students cook way to second in state

Thanks to the Baldwin High School culinary students, great smells of freshly cooked Asian food radiated throughout the school for more than a month. Those mouth-watering aromas ended in March, when the team placed second at the fifth-annual Kansas Restaurant and Hospitality Association Education Foundation Culinary Competition in Wichita. “We’re competing with schools of all sizes and all types of programs,” said Sandra Lawson, BHS family and consumer science teacher. “I think these kids from Baldwin did pretty well, considering what they were up against.”

Bulldogs add two more league wins

While battling cold and rainy weather, the Baldwin High School baseball team roughed up the Spring Hill Broncos Tuesday night 20-8. The Bulldogs (7-2 overall, 5-1 in league) played the Broncos in Louisburg, because Spring Hill’s fields were too wet. That didn’t stop Baldwin from adding another victory to its record.

LAWRENCE — Nervous was the word that Baldwin High School sophomore Heather Garcia used to describe the feeling of running against the best 39 girls from Kansas and seven surrounding states at the Kansas Relays. Garcia went on to set two of the six school records over the weekend at the prestigious meet in Lawrence. “My times were really good,” Garcia said. “I was really nervous, because there are so many people running.” BHS boys’ coach Mike Spielman was thrilled with how well the Bulldogs competed at the meet. “I am very pleased with our effort and performances at KU,” Spielman said. “The kids did a tremendous job of competing against the toughest competition they will see all year. We had many PRs (personal records) and school records. I couldn’t have been any happier with the two days.”

Black Jack plans are solidified

Piece by piece, the 150th anniversary celebration of the Battle of Black Jack is falling into place. The sesquicentennial commemoration is scheduled for June 2-3 just east of Baldwin where the first armed skirmish of the Civil War occurred in 1856.

Crowd, weather help Brown set new mark

Beautiful weather and many family and friends helped 2002 Baldwin High School graduate Eric Brown throw a new personal record at the Kansas Relays Friday evening. Brown, a University of Arkansas senior, improved his school and personal record by launching the javelin 256-3. That throw placed him second behind Olympian and Kansas University graduate Scott Russell.
