School board discusses budget, personnel
At Monday's meeting, the Baldwin Board of Education discussed the troubles with next year's budget, track and soccer field plans and personnel issues within the district.
Supt. James White presented a list of staffing needs for the district next year. The list included 12 positions that would total $317,000 for next year. Some of the positions are new, while others are not. No action was taken on the list, because the board is waiting on the Kansas Legislature to make a decision about educational funding.
The board did make two hires at the meeting for a Baldwin High School counselor and Baldwin Elementary School Intermediate Center fourth grade teacher. Although teacher reviews were discussed in executive session, no action was taken.
After talking with Baldwin High School Principal Allen Poplin in executive session, the board once again voted to not renew his contract for next year. The vote was 5-1 with Board President Lonnie Broers voting to renew his contract. Board Member Blaine Cone was absent at the meeting. Two weeks ago, the board voted 6-1 for nonrenewal, but Poplin requested a hearing.
The school board also continued its discussion about adding a track around the BHS soccer field.
There will be a full story on the meeting in Thursday's Signal.
