neighborhood project

Neighbor Helping Neighbor project will begin at 6:30 a.m. Saturday at the Clearfield United Methodist Church.

Celebration set for

Martha Smith

The Vinland United Methodist Church is planning a birthday celebration Sunday to honor Martha Smith's 100th birthday. Her birthday is Sept. 15.

The celebration will be held during regular morning worship services from 9:25 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. with a fellowship time to greet Martha from 10:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. No gifts, please. Cards may be brought to church or sent to Martha Smith, 911 Dearborn, Baldwin City, KS 66006.

RWD No. 4 to meet Tuesday

Rural Water District No. 4, Douglas County, will have its regular meeting beginning at 7 p.m., Tuesday, in the conference room of the district office.

Clearfield -- Ives youth

The Clearfield - Ives Chapel United Methodist group God's Musketeers will meet at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Clearfield UM Church. Youth 6th through 12th grades are invited.

The meeting day changed to Sunday evenings. They will meet on the second Sunday of the month at Clearfield and on the fourth Sunday at Ives Chapel. The new time is 6:30 p.m.

Friends schedule

annual mum sale

The Friends of the Baldwin City Library will have its annual mum sale from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, and during Art Walk from 7 to 9 p.m., and 8 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Sept. 17, on the lawn of the Baldwin City Library, Seventh and High streets.

Colorful, hearty chrysanthemums will be available for $5 each or buy nine and get the 10th one free. Shop early for the best selection.

For those who would like to volunteer to help with the sale, a sign-up sheet is located in the lobby of the library. The Friends of the Library would like to thank Baldwin Junction Greenhouse for providing the plants.

A support group that provides assistance to parents, grandparents and others raising children meets from 4 to 5:30 p.m. the first Sunday of each month at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2700 N. Lawrence Ave, Lawrence. Contact Valerie at (785) 841-2488.

Festival looking for

quilts to display

The Maple Leaf Festival Quilt Show is looking for quilts to display at the 32nd annual quilt show, held in conjunction with Baldwin City's Maple Leaf Festival on October 15-16.

This is not a judged show. There is no entry fee. The quilts must have a hanging sleeve. Quilts may be brought to Baldwin Elementary School Primary Center at Seventh and Chapel streets Friday, Oct. 15, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. or dropped off at Quilter's Paradise, 713 Eighth St. the week before the show.

Artist and Lecture

features guitarist

The Baker University Artist and Lecture Series will feature Stephen Bennett, guitarist, at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Rice Auditorium. Bennett is a regular performer at the Walnut Valley Flat-Picking/Blue Grass Festival held at Winfield each September as well as winner of numerous awards and honors.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and may be purchased at the door or any of the banks. Season tickets are also available for $40 for adults and $25 for students. Bennett will be available for autographs following the concert.
