- After discussing the superintendent’s job description for more than three hours, the Baldwin Board of Education and district administrators nearly completed their list of requirements for future candidates Tuesday night.
“I hope it was beneficial, because if it wasn’t, we wasted a lot of time,” School Board President Lonnie Broers said. “I think we got a good job description that the board and administrators know where it came from and how it was established. That’s helpful.”

- Unlike former Lawrence High teammate Stephen Vinson, D.J. Watkins wasn’t invited by then-Kansas University coach Roy Williams to become a preferred walk-on for the Jayhawks in the fall of 2002. He had to take his chances trying out for the team.
That didn’t keep Watkins from pursuing his dream.

- More than 700 undergraduate, graduate and nursing students at Baker University received diplomas during three separate ceremonies Saturday and Sunday at the Collins Center.

- It’s election day today in Baldwin City. Polls opened at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. Baldwin voters are being asked whether to allow the Sunday sale of alcohol or not.
If the weather forecasters are right, weather won’t be a factor in keeping people from the polls.
“Yes, it’s supposed to be nice,” said Baldwin City Clerk Peggy Nichols. “I’m looking forward to that.”
Polls are open at the usual locations: Baldwin Fire Station; American Legion Hall; and the Baldwin Elementary School Primary Center. The votes will also be tallied at the Legion Hall.

- Baker University’s men’s basketball team will be saying “feliz ano nuevo” when its celebrates New Year’s Eve in Madrid, Spain, during its nine-day holiday trip.
A party of 45 people will be leaving Kansas City, Mo., Tuesday for Madrid as part of the International Sports Exchange. The group will experience Spanish culture while the Wildcats play three exhibition basketball games.

- Even though the winter sports season is only three weeks old, the Baldwin High School basketball and wrestling teams are off to a good start with experience leading the way.

- There wasn’t much to Monday’s Baldwin City Council meeting, but in sort of a New Year’s resolution, the council decided to move its January meetings from the first and third Mondays to the second and fourth Mondays.

- The Baldwin High School wrestling team traveled to Raytown, Mo., Saturday to compete in the annual Raytown Christmas Tournament.
This tournament has always been a tough one for BHS because it features 20 big-class schools, numerous state placers, national champions and all-americans. Baldwin placed 14th as a team.

- A 3-1 record and an improved defense have the Baldwin High School boys’ basketball team feeling confident while still knowing it must focus on its next opponent after the break.

- As the Baldwin Board of Education continues to look at improving the school district’s facilities, the physical education department wanted to add its two cents at the Dec. 12 board meeting.
