BHS boys cross country wins easily
Superman himself would have been impressed by the speed of the Baldwin High School varsity boys cross country team at Prairie View Thursday. The 5 kilometer course had no fight for the Bulldogs as they trampled through it. The Bulldogs easily won the race with a perfect score of 15 points.
As it has been all season, leading the pack was junior Keith Cowart. He managed to get out quick and maintain his stride throughout the entire race. Cowart won the race with a time of 16:46.
"It was a great meet to show how much strength our team has," Cowart said.
Seniors Zac Towns and Sam Hinton fought for second place all the way to the finish. Towns gained some distance placing second with a time of 17:23 while teammate Hinton ran 17:24, achieving third.
"It was a fast but bumpy course," Hinton said. "Everyone ran really well and it was a good race to see where you stand on the team."
Finishing fourth was sophomore Chris Elniff. He was clocked in with a time of 17:49. Seventh, eighth and ninth places were awarded to freshman Dustin Schiller, sophomore Caj Kueffer and freshman Aaron Karlin. Their times were 17:50, 17:51, and 17:52. All seven runners were impressively under 18 minutes and finished in the top 10.
"I was very pleased," coach Mike Spielman said. "We had some younger kids that had never ran varsity before and they all did a great job. Our team was more mentally tough today."
The next race will be on Thursday in Topeka at the Hayden Invitational. Because they are combining all boys into one race and all girls into another, there will only be two actual races to watch. The top seven runners of each team will then be marked as varsity to tabulate scores.
