Traffic signal in place
At long last, the traffic signal at the intersection of U.S. Highway 56 and Sixth Street is finally becoming a reality.
Construction crews were at the intersection Wednesday morning installing the poles that will be used to install the lights. City officials said it is unknown how long it will be before the lights are operational.
The Kansas Department of Transportation approved the installation of the lights after years of traffic studies. The signal lights were originally to have been installed prior to the start of school, but the project was delayed because the poles had not been ordered.
Baldwin residents have waited patiently for the lights, which are hoped to ease the congestion at the busy intersection.
"Of course, were' excited about this," said Mayor Ken Hayes. "We realize there was a long delay, but we'll finally get the light installed."
