Baker soccer team tops Cards, heads to nationals
Marty Johnston beat William Jewell again as Baker University rallied for a 2-1 overtime victory Saturday and qualified for the NAIA National Championship.
After 78 minutes of scoreless soccer, Josh Howard gave William Jewell a 1-0 lead with 11:14 remaining in the game. Baker's Jason Swarts, a junior from Kansas City, Mo., tied the game with 5:40 left.
The game went into "golden goal," or sudden death, overtime. Just 100 seconds into overtime, senior Luke Parrott of Olathe crossed the ball to Johnston, who knocked it in for the win. Johnson, a sophomore from Leawood, scored the only goal in Baker's 1-0 victory against Jewell on Sept. 22.
Both teams will now advance to the NAIA National Championship, to be held at College Boulevard Athletic Complex in Olathe Wednesday through Tuesday. Baker had to win the regional championship to gain a berth, while Jewell received an automatic berth as the tournament host team.
Tournament pairings were announced Sunday. The Cardinals received the 15th seed and played in the first round on Wednesday. Baker, as the 12th seed, received a first-round bye. The Wildcats will play fifth-seed Simon Fraser University (B.C.) at 3 p.m. Friday.
