Baker men continue good start

November 18, 2004

OTTAWA -- Another second-half scoring burst by the Baker University Wildcats was key in a 76-74 overtime victory against Midland Lutheran College Saturday at the Ottawa Classic.

Baker was trailing 25-19 at halftime, then scored 47 points in the second half to force overtime. The Wildcats took down Midland 10-8 in the extra period for the win.

The Wildcat attack was boosted by balanced scoring and exceptional (26 for 32) free-throw shooting. Senior Josh Flett of Wellsville scored 19 points and made all seven of his free throws. Sophomore DJ Watkins of Lawrence had 16 points (nine for 10 on free throws), sophomore Ross Thompson of Ottawa had 15 points and a game-high seven rebounds, and junior David Ward of Paola added 11 points.

Baker was not so proficient at the line on Monday. Versus the same University of St. Mary team it had beat at the St. Mary Classic on Nov. 6, the Wildcats fell behind 16 at halftime and lost 79-66. The Wildcats made just 16 of 31 free throws.

Thompson and Flett led Baker with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Freshman Andy Hannon of Baldwin City had 10 points and was a perfect four for four on free throws.

Thompson leads the Heart of America Athletic Conference in field goal percentage at 70.3-percent. Junior Tyler Scifers of Pittsburg is third in the conference in assists per game with 6.0.

Baker will challenge Haskell Indian Nations University at 7:30 p.m. tonight in Lawrence, then will face Ottawa University at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Ottawa.
