ECKAN to assist with
ECKAN will be taking applications for school supplies August 2-13 at the ECKAN Center, One Riverfront Plaza, Suite 101, Lawrence. Call for appointment, (785) 841-3357. Clients must meet poverty income guidelines.
ECKAN is requesting donations of school supplies or cash for school supplies for Douglas County low-income families. Needed supplies are: No. 2 pencils, pens, notebooks, notebook paper, colored pencils, rulers, erasers, crayons and markers which can be dropped off at the center.
Weaver on Dean's
List at Simpson
Rebecca Weaver, Baldwin City, has been named to the Simpson College Dean's List for the spring 2004 semester. Weaver is a sophomore art major. To be included on the Dean's List, a student must achieve a grade point of 3.7 or better on a 4.0 scale.
Arnold to be honored
Andrea Lynn Arnold, Baldwin City, accepted membership in The National Society of Collegiate Scholars and will be honored during a campus ceremony in the fall at Kansas State University.
The NSCS is a highly selective, national, non-profit honors organization. Founded in 1994, NSCS recognizes first and second year undergraduate students who excel academically. The society has a web page at www.nscs.org.
Fundraiser set for
Eudora HS band
The Cardinal Daze Festival has been scheduled for Aug. 28 from 3 to 10 p.m. at the City Park in Eudora. Sponsors are needed who can donate money or goods to raffle. Sponsors names and phone numbers will be placed on a banner. Food will be available. Bands will perform blues, western and bluegrass. Bring instruments to participate in a jam session. Adults will be $5, 10 and under $2.50, two and under will be free.
The Pleasant Valley Community is hosting the first ever "Discover the Past with Living History" on Sept. 18 at the Pleasant Valley School, Thomas and Tennessee roads, Wellsville. The Independence Historical Museum at Eighth and Myrtle streets, Independence, will host the Woodcarvers' Show on August 14 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Aug. 15 from 1 to 5 p.m. Admission is $1 per person.
