Ives Chapel to meet

for breakfast

The Ives Chapel UMW will meet Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. at Black Jack Diner for breakfast and a brief business meeting. Dolores Kalb will lead devotions.

Vinland FCE to

have meeting

The Vinland FCE will meet Tuesday at 9 a.m. at the Vinland Methodist Church for a workday to make noodles. Members should bring a covered dish salad and table service for lunch. The meeting will begin at 1:30 p.m. Roll call will be how to prepare nutritious meals with less effort. Lola Ford will give the lesson, "Eating well but cooking less." Elizabeth Hemphill will be hostess.

Bayer awards 2004

science scholarship

Sam Reznicek, an undergraduate student at Kansas State University, Manhattan, recently received a 2004 Bayer Undergraduate Scholarship for $500. Reznicek is pursuing a degree in science. Bayer recognizes science students who have demonstrated academic excellence and leadership skills. Reznicek is a 2001 graduate of Baldwin High School.

ECKAN Agency to

distribute food items

The ECKAN Agency will distribute food items to eligible Douglas County commodity participants on Thursday, July 22, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the American Legion Hall, Baldwin.

New virtual school

enrolling students

Lawrence Virtual School is now enrolling students for its inaugural school year. Students learn at home with a parent guiding the daily lessons. Though lessons are delivered on-line, most of the students' work is completed away from the computer with provided materials. Certified teachers provide guidance, support, accountability and advice. Lawrence Virtual School is a public school, so there is no tuition. Minimal enrollment fees will be assessed (Kindergarten: $43.50/year and Grades 1-8: $97/year). The Kansas State Department of Education on March 9, 2004, approved charter status for the Lawrence Public Schools, USD 497, to create a virtual school. Lied Center hosts

free concert

The Lied Center of Kansas and KU Credit Union will host a free Family Arts Festival and Outdoor Concert featuring the Lawrence City Band on Aug. 20. The festival begins at 6 p.m. in the garden courtyard on the east side of the Lied Center. The Lawrence Band will perform on the northeast lawn at 7 p.m. If it rains, the event will be inside the Lied Center. For more information, call (785) 864-2787.

Forsberg completes

degree at WSU

Travis Forsberg, Baldwin, was one of nearly 1,500 students who completed their degrees at Wichita State University in spring 2004. Spring commencement ceremonies were held May 14-15. Forsberg graduated with a bachelor's degree in business administration.
