Search still on for Baker football coach
From Signal Staff Reports
Initially it was hoped that there would be a new football coach in place at Baker University by now. However, that didn't happen, but it's hoped that it will happen soon.
Dan Harris, BU's athletic director, is in Orlando, Fla., attending the American Football Coaches Assn. and interviewing candidates for the vacancy.
"We're a little bit behind where we wanted to be, "but we're on the right track." Harris said by phone Monday from Orlando.
John Frangoulis resigned Nov. 17 in the wake of three consecutive losing seasons at the Baldwin-based university. Frangoulis had been the Wildcats' head coach for the last eight years.
By early December, Harris said he had identified six potential candidates to fill the post, adding that he hoped to have the new coach on the job this week. That timetable had to be scrubbed, however.
"We did some interviews, and things didn't work out," Harris said. "We had to re-start the search."
Stacy Cohen, Baker's director of public relations, said the initial choice for coach declined the offer.
"We are starting from scratch," Cohen said. "The person we wanted decided not to take it."
Harris plans to return from the convention Wednesday, meet with the school's search committee Wednesday night, then make a recommendation to school president Dan Lambert the next day and name the new coach by Friday.
The search committee includes several Baker professors, several current Baker football players and a number of alumns, such as Mike Berg, head football coach at Baldwin High School.
"I haven't heard a thing," said Berg. "No one from the committee has called me with any news."
Other members of the committee are: Rand Ziegler, Associate Dean of Faculty; Dr. Wayne Osness, grandparent of current BU athletes and member of University Athletic Facility Committee; Jim Lehman, vice president of Overland Park Bank and BU football alumni; Lee Green, Professor of Business and Economics and Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR) to the HAAC; Martha Harris, Professor of Business and Economics; Janet McManus, Director of Human Resources; Rising Senior Football player Chance Nichols; and Graduating Senior Football players Jarrod Steffens and Silas Dulan.
