Honomichl named coach of the year
Special to the Signal
Baldwin High School girls tennis coach Ginny Honomichl received the Class 4A Coach of the Year award for tennis, marking an honorable finish for the 2003 team. Votes came in from coaches across the state, with Honomichl gaining the majority.
"It's an honor," Honomichl said of winning the award, "because it's voted on by coaches."
Baldwin's state qualifiers and high placers at state led to Honomichl's nomination. Still, despite being Coach of the Year, Honomichl doesn't think things will change.
"Nothing will change," said Honomichl. "I've received this award in the past, and nothing has changed."
Honomichl also doubts that winning the award will change the way the team reacts to her.
"I doubt (the team attitude) will change, and I wouldn't expect it to," Honomichl stated.
The members of Honomichl's 2003 team are very happy for their coach.
"She's a really good coach," said senior Kalie Harris. "She makes us work hard and makes us work on our mistakes we made in previous matches. It helps us perform better in future situations."
While the award is for the 2003 season, Honomichl is already looking forward to next year. With a few state qualifiers graduating, she hopes the newcomers can add to the team.
"We want to have fun, try to medal in all of our meets and qualify at least some for the state tournament," said Honomichl. "I don't think that's going to change at all."
Honomichl will receive the award Feb. 21 at the Seventh Annual Hall of Fame banquet at Wichita Collegiate High School.
