Mildred Allen to celebrate 90th

Family and friends are welcome to attend a reception for Mildred Allen as she celebrates her 90th birthday on Saturday, Jan. 1, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Pioneer Ridge Community Retirement, 4851 Harvard Rd., Lawrence.

BPW to host guest speaker

Business and Professional Women will meet Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Vintage Park Center. Guest speaker will be Connie Havens, coordinator for volunteer services for a hospice care provider who is looking for volunteers. Contact Lisa Robertson at 594-2911 for more information.

Vinland Cemetery Association to meet

The annual meeting of the Vinland Cemetery Association will be at the Vinland United Methodist Church, Saturday, Jan. 8, at 1 p.m. All interested persons are invited to attend.

Sunday events planned at Ives

Jan. 2 is Epiphany Sunday at Ives Chapel United Methodist Church. A celebration of commitment is planned for the 11 a.m. service. Family "footprints" will be placed at the manger of the Christ Child.

Jan. 9 a potluck dinner will follow the morning worship service. A time of planning, setting goals and directions will be shared following the meal.

Overbrook church changes name

Overbrook First Christian Church is changing its name to Grace Community Church Jan. 1. Construction is underway on a new 1,000-seat sanctuary to accommodate the 400 to 600 people who attend services.

BBB advises to check billings

Consumers and businesses should scrutinize their billing statements and invoices for items or services not ordered. Scam artists take advantage of the busy season to place charges on credit cards and telephone bills.

The Better Business Bureau advises to check statements quickly and carefully and contact your service provider to dispute charges. Contact the BBB if you need help getting charges removed form a billing at 785-232-0454 or www.topeka.bbb.org.

Appraiser to mail assessment forms

The Douglas County Appraiser's office will mail the 2005 Personal Property Assessment Forms Thursday. Taxpayers who had taxable personal property such as boats, mobile homes, large trucks, trailers, machinery and equipment in 2004 will be sent a form. The form must be signed and returned by March 15 or filers will be subject to a late filing penalty. Taxpayers who own such property and do not receive a form should contact the office at 785-832-5289.
