Wildcat men tumble to No. 9 MANC

December 9, 2004

Tyler Scifers played the role of point guard perfectly, but he couldn't make up for his teammates' bad free throw shooting in a 74-61 loss to No. 9 MidAmerica Nazarene University Monday in Olathe.

Scifers, a junior from Pittsburg, had eight assists, a steal and only one turnover while making two three-pointers and tallying six points in the game. However, Baker made only 12 of 29 free throws while MidAmerica made 19 of 24. Junior David Ward of Paola led Baker with 11 points and six rebounds.

Baker was first in the Heart of America Athletic Conference before the game with a 2-0 record. MidAmerica and No. 2 William Jewell were the only other undefeated teams with one win apiece.

In a flashback to last year, sophomore guards D.J. Watkins and Darin Redeker led Baker to victory Saturday afternoon by toppling Avila University 68-58 in the Collins Center.

Watkins scored 17 points (6-6 on free throws) and Redeker added 14 points (4 three-pointers). Watkins also had a game-high nine rebounds.

Last year, Watkins or Redeker led Baker in scoring in 19 of 32 games. This year, other players have stepped up and the duo have only led Baker twice in 14 games.

Baker and Avila were tied late in the first half until Baker went on a 14-2 run in the final six minutes, with Redeker 3's serving as bookends.

The Wildcats made 54.8-percent of their field goals in the contest, while limiting Avila to 36.8-percent. It was the second consecutive game in which Baker had shot over 50-percent.

The Wildcats have two of the conference's best shooters in Ward and sophomore center Ross Thompson. Ward is leading the conference in three-point shooting accuracy with 50-percent success (33 of 66) after 14 games. Thompson is making 67.6-percent of his field goals, while the runner-up is trailing far behind at 60.4-percent.

Baker has a few weeks off for Christmas break. The Wildcats' next game is on Dec. 3 when they challenge William Jewell in Libery, Mo.
