Scrimmage set for

Friday for BHS football

It's that time of year again -- sports action is heating up at Baldwin High School. It will get into high gear with the annual football scrimmage Friday night.

The freshmen will play first at 7 p.m., followed by the varsity at around 7:30 p.m. Action will be at the junior varsity/freshmen game field west of BHS.

First game action at BHS is volleyball, with the varsity at Bonner Springs Tuesday (see story, this page). Varsity tennis opens Sept. 2 at Topeka Seaman, which is the same date as the first home action with the BHS freshman football team facing Eudora. Varsity football kicks off the season Sept. 3 at Liston Stadium by hosting Gardner.

Baker sports ready

to get into action

A full slate of sports action got under way this week for Baker University.

The mens soccer team kicked off the action Wednesday at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Results weren't available by press time. The team had an exhibition match Sunday and will have an alumni game Saturday at 1 p.m. at the soccer field north of Baldwin High School. The Wildcat will hit the road to California next week with games again California State University-Dominguez Hill on Sept. 3 and Grand Canyon University on Sept. 5.

The womens soccer team will also have an alumni game Saturday at 10 a.m. The Wildcats will have the first home game for either squad Tuesday at 2 p.m.

The Wildcat volleyball team jumps into action big time Friday and Saturday in the Heart of America Athletic Conference tournament in Mashall, Mo. First home action is Tuesday against Mid America Nazarene with the junior varsity contest at 5:30 p.m., followed by the varsity at 7 p.m. On Sept. 3, the Wildcats will play host to Kansas Wesleyan at 7 p.m. Both home contests next week are in the Collins Center.

Both cross country teams start off the season on Sept. 4 with the Maple Leaf Invitational in Baldwin City. The women are set to run at 10 a.m. and the men at 10:45 a.m.

Sept. 4 is also the first game for the football team. The Wildcats will play host to Evangel at 7 p.m. at Liston Stadium. It marks the coaching debut for Mike Grossner (see related story this page).

Tryouts scheduled for

Bulldawg Baseball Club

The 2005 Bulldawgs Baseball Club, a competitive, 12-and-under USSSA Tournament Team, will be conducting player tryouts in Baldwin, Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the high school.

Annual football preview

to be in next week's Signal

Every year the Lawrence Journal-World and the Baldwin City Signal include a football preview guide in issues prior to the first games of the season.

The Signal will have the preview, done by editor Jeff Myrick, in next week's issue. Along with the story will be a photo of the team.
