Practices start Monday for BHS
First day of practices for Baldwin High School sports are Monday. Those sports are football, cross country, volleyball and tennis.
Football will have the earliest start, but not by much. Coach Mike Berg will kickoff two-a-day practices at 6 a.m. Monday. Cross country coach Mike Spielman won't be too far behind, as his defending state champion boys and girls squads will run for the first time at 6:30 a.m.
Both coaches weren't sure about what to make of the weather. A year ago, brutal heat forced changes in practice plans and tennis coach Ginny Honomichl went so far as to not have them. Recently, it's been unusually cool for August, but it's hard to tell what Monday will be like.
"Our second practice will depend on the heat," said Berg. "If we don't have heat, we'll go at 3:30 p.m. If we do, we'll go from 6 to 8 p.m."
Spielman said the cross country teams would have their second practice at 7 p.m. Monday, but only because he doesn't know that the coolness will continue.
Honomichl's first tennis practice is set for 3:37 p.m. Monday. First-year volleyball coach Jim Oatman could not be reached for practice times.
