Services for Mark A. Mitchel, 41, Baldwin City, were Monday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary, Lawrence. Mr. Mitchel died April 21, 2004, while fishing at Lake Shawnee, Topeka.

He was born Aug. 23, 1962, at Liberal, the son of Farrell D. and Ruth M. (Hammer) Mitchel. He graduated from Lawrence High School in 1982 and attended a technical college. He was a member of Trout Unlimited.

He worked as a lead mechanic for Westside 66 and as a disassembler for Mid America.

Survivors include his mother, Ruth Mitchel, Lawrence; a sister, Miriam Mitchel, Eudora; one aunt and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1999.

He was cremated. Memorial contributions may be made to Trout Unlimited and sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th, Lawrence, KS 66044. Online condolences may be sent to subject: Mitchel.


Services for Freda B. Spencer, 88, Lawrence, were Tuesday at the Church of Christ in Lawrence. Mrs. Spencer died April 25, 2004, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

She was born Dec. 1, 1915, in Stull, Kan., the daughter of Fred H. and Ettie (Kreipe) Wulfkuhle. She attended Deer Creek Grade School and was a 1934 graduate of Liberty Memorial High School.

She married John Frank Spencer Dec. 30, 1942, in Big Springs, Kan. He survives of the home.

She was a lifelong resident of the Douglas County area. She worked at the Douglas County Treasurer's Office in Lawrence until retiring in 1976. She was a member of the Church fo Christ in Lawrence.

Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Dorothy Martin and her husband, Gerald, Baldwin; one son, Calvin Spencer and his wife, Shirley, Lawrence; one sister, Letha Wulfkuhle, Lawrence; four grandchildren, one step grandson, two great grandchildre and three step great grandchildren.

Burial was at Zion Cemetery in Shawnee County. Memorials may be made to the William Hensley Memorial Fund at the Church of Christ and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th, Lawrence, KS 66044.


Visitation for Jenny Lee Starling, 69, Wellsville was Wednesday at Wilson's Funeral Home in Wellsville. Mrs. Starling died Monday at Royal Terrace Nursing Facility in Wellsville. She was cremated.

She was born Nov. 15, 1934, in Alton, Ill., the daughter of William James and Dorothy Margaret (Coatney) Clifford. She graduated from East Alton Woodriver High School.

She married Bill Starling Oct. 29, 1955, in Alton. He died in 2001.

She was a cook for much of her life, and had lived in Wellsville for the past 40 years. She was a member of the Wellsville American Legion Auxillary and the local Red Hat Society.

She is survived by her children, Kim Starling, Olathe; Keith Starling, Olathe; Tootie Starling, Olathe; Jimbo Starling, Gardner; Scott Starling, Wellsville; Gina Bawden, Hawaii; 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.
