The Baldwin City Police Department recently received a much needed grant. The BCPD was awarded a $2,100 Federal Local Law Enforcement Block Grant, which Police Chief Mike McKenna will be used to purchase some needed equipment for the department.

Winter is here, which means it’s perfect weather for a parade. The first Sunday in December will mark the fourth annual holiday lighted parade sponsored by the Baldwin City Chamber of Commerce.

A small container of pepper spray caused the evacuation of Baldwin High School and sent several people to the hospital last week.
Reading to help others
VES hopes to use books to raise money for needy families

Vinland Elementary School students are hitting the books in an effort to help impoverished families. The school kicked off its Read to Feed program last week, encouraging students to read books as a way to help others. The VES student leadership team organized the fundraiser, which has students obtaining pledges from parents, relatives and teachers for each book they read. The money raised by the students will be given to Heifer International, where livestock like cows, pigs and chickens are given to disadvantaged families to help them become self-reliant. “It’s for families in poorer countries that don’t have much food,” VES fifth grader Colin Thomas said.
