Season ends for golfers in Ottawa

It was a tough day for the Baldwin High School golfers. The Bulldogs had to play in the rain at the Ottawa Country Club against some of the toughest teams in the state. The team finished seventh out of nine teams in the regional which ended the season for three seniors who participated May 19.
BHS tennis team 10th at state

The Baldwin High School tennis team finished 10th at the State Tennis Tournament here Saturday, with sophomore Chris Irick leading the way with a seventh-place finish individually.

The Baldwin High School boys track team qualified four runners for the State Track Meet while finishing 11th as a team at the Class 4A Regional meet here Friday.

Baldwin observes Memorial Day

Emotions were high and, as usual, more than a few tears were shed during Memorial Day services at Oakwood Cemetery Monday morning. The annual service conducted by the American Legion’s Lloyd Beaton Post No. 228 always draws a faithful crowd to remember fallen soldiers and others. It took on additional meaning this year with the memories fresh from the just completed war in Iraq. This year’s speaker was Baldwin City’s Gerald Cullumber, a Sergeant in the Lenexa Police Department whose dad, Charles Cullumber, is a member of the local Legion post. Cullumber set the tone for the service with one of his first remarks.

When the Baldwin High School Bulldog softball team jumped out to a three-run lead in the third inning of Wednesday’s Regional Championship game, things were looking bright.

Signs to showcase community qualities

Downtown Baldwin will be looking a little different thanks to a couple of new signs from the Maple Leaf Festival signage committee. The two signs, which feature not only the Maple Leaf Festival, but other attractions of the Baldwin community as well, will be displayed year round in the downtown area.
4 Baldwin schools excel on assessments

The Baldwin School District is proving its schools are ones worthy of being called excellent. Four out of the district’s five schools — Baldwin High School, Baldwin Junior High School, Vinland Elementary School and Baldwin Elementary School — all received at least one Standard of Excellence designation on state assessment tests.
