Council discusses lighting, safety on Eighth Street

A section of Eighth Street could get a little lighter at night, but it won’t yet because of new street lights. The Baldwin City Council, on the advice of the public safety committee, decided to try trimming trees but did not make a decision on installing more street lights along what Baker University students have called a too dark section of Eighth Street.
Collision kills local woman

A Baldwin woman was killed and her daughter seriously injured following a head-on collision Saturday afternoon on U.S. Highway 59. Jeannie M. Eye, 40, died when her car was hit head on by a truck about a half mile north of the Franklin County line.
Bank employee arrested for theft of $20,000

A former Baldwin State Bank employee was arrested on two counts of felony theft Friday. Gretchen Olson, 29, Baldwin, allegedly stole around $20,000 from Baldwin State Bank over a two-year span during her tenure as a bank employee.
Flory wrestles way to first in Kansas

This time around, Baldwin High School wrestler Kyle Flory had just what it took to become a Class 4A championship — motivation. Flory, a junior wrestling at 171 pounds, dominated Columbus’ Kurtis Baylor 12-3 in Saturday night’s final in Wichita’s Kansas Coliseum. Just a year ago, Flory also made the finals but settled for second. He wasn’t going to let that happen this time around.
Baker baseball team opens up season 1-5

The Baker University baseball team opened up the 2003 schedule by going 1-5 in action at Lawton, Okla., Saturday and Sunday.
Baker women fall to Evangel in playoffs

The Baker University women came close Monday night in the Heart of America Athletic Conference post-season tournament. But, the fifth-seeded Wildcats fell 59-50 to Evangel.

BHS girls grab Frontier League crown

There was no doubt Friday night. The Baldwin High School girls took care of business and capped an unbeaten Frontier League basketball season here by clobbering Louisburg 55-33.
Flory’s title leads way at state for BHS

For the second year in a row, Baldwin High School’s Kyle Flory wrestled his way into the finals at the Class 4A State Tournament in Wichita last weekend. The only difference being a gold medal as a result this time around as Flory claimed his state championship at 171 pounds.
Bulldogs get hot in sub-state opener

Finally, the 3s were falling and everything else clicked for the Baldwin High School Bulldogs. They put it all together and won 68-61 over Kansas City Piper at the right time — the sub-state opener in Piper Monday night.
