Letters to the editor
To the editor:
On behalf of the American Cancer Society and the Relay for Life Committee, we would like to publicly thank all of those businesses and individuals who made this year's Relay for Life such a resounding success. Thanks to your volunteerism, hard work and generosity, we raised more than $25,000 for the Heart of America Division of the American Cancer Society for their use in providing cancer patient care and support, and of course the continuing battle to find a cure for this disease.
Our heartfelt thanks to the Baldwin community.

To the editor:
Baldwin City has a strong tradition of supporting its library. Since the first City Library opened in the basement of Baldwin's City Hall in 1916, the community has developed a variety of fundraisers to help the library grow and prosper. Two of the earliest were a musical recital by a Baker music professor and area grade school children, and a travel lecture on Alaska by a noted speaker in 1918.
In 1987, the Friends of the Baldwin City Library was founded to raise money for a new library building and started many of the fundraising activities it still promotes today -- the city-wide garage sale and plant sales.
Baldwin City residents again have an opportunity to support the library while making a little cash and lightening their loads. The 16th Annual Baldwin City-Wide Garage Sale is scheduled for Saturday.
Area residents who registered their sales will have their treasures and the address of their sale listed in the Friends of the Library Garage Sale Directory and will receive a yard sign identifying them as library supporters. This $5 registration fee also pays for a year's membership in the Friends of the Library. Each year nearly 150 garage sales and businesses are listed in the directory.
Through this event, the Friends of the Library raises funds to help sponsor the summer reading program, guest speakers, Book Talks and Night of 1,000 Stars, and has helped the library purchase new materials.
The Friends also needs help handing out signs and distributing directories on the weekend of the sale. A signup sheet will be located in the library lobby. The library is located downtown at Seventh and High streets.
Yard signs can be picked up at the library on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. Members of the Friends of the Library may pick up free advance copies the Garage Sale Directory on Friday. The directory will be available to the general public for $1 on Saturday morning, either at the library or in front of retail center on the north side of U.S. Highway 56 between Ninth and 10th streets.
Thank you for supporting our library and for participating in this community-wide event.
