Baldwin resident remembers downtown cabinet company

The business at 602 High St. doesn’t look like it did when Baldwin resident Mary Barthol worked there nearly 60 years ago. The building that currently is home to Vaughncraft Percussion, 82-year-old Barthol remembers as the Early Cabinet Co. She said the company, owned by Ed Early and his father, John Early, moved from the Kansas City area to Baldwin in the mid-‘40s. “They moved here because they thought they could get college help,” she said.

BCCT musical ‘Birdie’ to be moved inside

It’s meant to be a good-bye like no other. Elvis-like rock star Conrad Birdie is heading into the military. But plans are being made to make his sendoff one to remember. Set in the early ‘60s, Baldwin City Community Theatre’s summer musical, “Bye Bye Birdie,” revolves around rock ‘n’ roll star Birdie’s final appearance before he is drafted.
Decision made to move U.S. 59 300 feet east of current location

It came as no surprise Friday morning when Kansas Department of Transportation officials conducted a news conference from the bypass bridge over U.S. Highway 59 in south Lawrence that the location for the new freeway to replace U.S. 59 would be 300 feet east of the current highway.
School board discusses trimming district budget

Unlike the previous two budget-related meetings, Monday night’s Board of Education gathering consisted of board-member discussion about where to proceed with trimming around $236,000 off next year’s budget because of possible cuts in state aid.
Halford leads local wrestlers at state-level tournament

For the third time in the last four years, Baldwin High School was the site of the state’s top wrestling action as BHS hosted the 2003 Kansas State Freestyle/Greco-Roman Tournament Saturday and Sunday.
BHS girls finish seventh at state

There wasn’t a team title for the Baldwin High School girls track team at the State Track Meet in Wichita this weekend, but there was an individual title brought home. Rachel Miles served up a thrilling photo-finish to win the 400-meter dash and secure the Bulldogs only gold medal.
