Baldwin softball players bound for nationals
Baldwin City's Courtney Johnson and Megan Burton are members of the Phenix-Hamilton 14-and-under fastpitch team from Lawrence. The team traveled to Springfield, Mo., the weekend of July11-13 to the American Softball Association 14-and-under B regionals where they competed against teams from Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Iowa to try and qualify for ASA nationals.
The team placed second out of 25 teams at the tournament. They won 6 and lost 2 in tournament play that weekend. Placing second qualified the team for ASA nationals which will be in Springfield, Mo., again for the ASA 14-and-under B nationals that will run from July 29 through Aug. 2.
The team also qualified earlier this year to go to the AFA 14-and-under B nationals which will be in Lawrence this year at the Clinton Lake Complex. That tournament started Tuesday and will run through Sunday. The location of the that tourney allows for the hometown crowd to attend.
Both Johnson and Burton will be freshman at Baldwin High School this year.
