Tournament crown goes to Baldwin
Baldwin High School's entry in the Gardner 7-on-7 football league wrapped up an unbeaten season Monday night to claim both the league and tournament titles.
Baldwin was 7-0 during the regular season and ended up 10-0 after the tournament after winning Monday's championship game 28-14 over Louisburg. BHS also beat DeSoto 28-14 Monday in the semifinals to advance and claim Baldwin's first-ever titles in the summer football wars.
"I was very impressed with what our kids did this summer," said coach Mike Berg. "It's hard to go undefeated in that league. The kids played hard every game and played smart."
Both offense and defense contributed, as did each team member from seniors down to sophomores.
"Kyle Flory intercepted two balls and Micah Mason intercepted a ball Monday when teams were going into score," said Berg. "The kids made critical plays at critical times.
"Our quarterbacks, Jason Kesinger and Jeremy Wright, were on target all summer getting the ball to the receivers at the right time," he said. "Each played a half of each game and we didn't lose a beat. They found the open guy."
While there are no records, it's believed that Baldwin notched a first.
"It's the first time anyone has gone undefeated in that league," said Berg. "That's very hard to do and our kids made it see easy. It was our first tournament title, too. All the kids contributed. It's not like we had one guy do it. It was a total team effort."
