Skyhawks fall short in tournament play
There was no top-three finish for the Baldwin Skyhawks softball team for the first time this year at the Council Grove "Pride in America" KASA Softball tournament this weekend.
The Skyhawks opened tourney play with a victory, but wound up with a 2-3 record which was out of the money. During their first two tournaments of the summer, the Skyhawks had brought home second place finishes each time.
In Saturday's tournament opener, Baldwin downed Paola Cherokee 7-1 behind the pitching of Kasey Pittenger. Kari Garrison had two hits and two runs batted in and Erica Ogle also had a pair of RBI to lead the offense.
In the second game Saturday, the Skyhawks fell 6-3 to the Topeka Rebels. Kyla Lewis took the loss on the mound. Kalie Harris had two hits and Lauren Gilges had a RBI.
Pittenger helped spark the Skyhawks back into the winning ways by pitching the team to a 4-2 win over the Council Grove Red Hots to close out Saturday's play. Harris had three hits and three RBI and Megan Metzler had two hits.
Sunday opened with another loss, this a shut out at the hands of the Lawrence Hummers 3-0. Pittenger took the loss and the Skyhawks were limited to just three hits.
The Skyhawks closed out tourney play with a 6-4 loss to Paola Cherokee. Lewis was the losing pitcher. Garrison had two RBI, Metzler an RBI and both Harris and Ogle had a pair of hits.
Next action for the Skyhawks will be Friday through Sunday at the State ASA 18-and-under "B" Tournament in Emporia.
