A look at Baldwin sports 2003 in review

When reviewing the past year in sports action for Baldwin, there's a little bit of everything for highlights. But, leading the way, were the numerous state performances and appearances by Baldwin High School athletes.

BHS crowned one individual and two teams as Class 4A champions in 2003. Kyle Flory was the individual with his state title in the 171-pound weight division.

As for the team titles, of course it was the BHS cross country teams again. The Bulldog boys won their amazing sixth straight Class 4A championship and the girls turned in their second.

But, the title winners weren't the only Bulldogs that went to state. Both the boys and girls were in Wichita for state track again. The BHS tennis team had a doubles duo at state. For the second year in a row, the Bulldog volleyball and football teams went to state and both turned in their best showing in years. The volleyball team wound up second at state and the football team advanced to the third round of the playoffs.

The volleyball team also saw a first when senior Emily Brown signed a letter of intent to play at the University of Kansas. Brown was rated as one of the top 50 players in the nation and there was quite a recruiting war among Division I schools to gain her services. Football signings are sure to follow, too, after seniors Micah Mason and Ricky Spotz gained all-state honors. Mason also set the BHS single season rushing mark with more than 2,000 yards this year.

There were other top sports stories, too. Leading the way at Baker University was the resignation of long-time football coach John Frangoulis at the end of the season in November. He had led the Wildcat fortunes for eight years and had been at Baker for 11 seasons.

Baldwin also had quite a run in the Douglas County Amateur Baseball Association. Three teams -- the 9-, 10- and 12-year-old squads -- won a variety of league and league tournament titles.

There was plenty of other sports action in the year. What follows is a week by week look.
