Meetings changed

because of Labor Day

Baldwin City Council will meet Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Baldwin Library due to the Labor Day holiday. Baldwin Booster Club will meet Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. at Baldwin High School.

Seniors can gather

for potluck and cards

Senior citizens can get together the first and third Fridays of the month to have a potluck and play cards at the Senior Center. The potluck begins at 6 p.m. and the card playing follows at 7 p.m.

Clearfiled -- Ives youth

The Clearfield -- Ives Chapel United Methodist Youth Ministry will meet at 7 p.m. on today at Ives Chapel UM Church. Youth sixth through 12th grade are invited.

Children's ministry

to begin at Worden

Worden United Methodist Church announces a new children's ministry called Faith Weavers. The meetings will be Wednesdays from 3:30--5:30 p.m. beginning Sept. 3 for children Kindergarten through the fifth grade. There will be snacks, crafts, games, Bible stories, music and fun. The first meeting of the academic year for the Baldwin Branch of the American Association of University Women is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, in the Baker University Library.

Jan Boyd will present the program on "Birding in Britain." Boyd and her husband, Roger Boyd, recently spent a semester in England with a group of students from Baker University.

Refreshments will be served by Janet McManus. Any woman, who is a graduate of a four-year college, is invited to attend the meeting and consider AAUW membership.

Junior Dairy Show

Area kids competed in State Dairy Judging, Quiz Bowl, Showmanship and Breed Judging held in Salina.

Members of the Douglas County Sr. Quiz Bowl team are Jessica Ardahl, Dale Baker, Kalli Keen and Katy Taul. They won the division and will compete in Louisville, Ky., in November. This is the first time in Douglas County history that the team has won. Bailey Brown competed in the open division on the silage cutters team and won a first place medal. Senior team members Dale Baker, Mark Jehle, Kalli Keen and Travis Spring placed seventh. Senior division individuals were Katy Taul fifth, Jessica Ardahl ninth. Junior division individuals were Lacey Hunsinger, fourth, Casey George tied for seventh, Kelly Baker 14th, Bailey Brown 18th, Brittnay George 19th and Christopher Brown 42nd.

Showmanship results were: Rachel Sanders, first place champion 7-8 year olds; Christopher Brown, red; Brittnay George, red; Casey George fifth place blue 9-10 year olds; Kelly Baker, first place champion 11-12 year olds; Dale Baker, fourth place blue 13-14 year olds; Kalli Keen, fourth blue; Jessica Ardahl, fifth blue15-16 year olds; Katy Taul, fourth blue 17-19 year olds.

Breed judging results were: Brown Swiss, Jessica Ardahl, fourth Jr. heifer calf, third Sr. 2-year-old cow; Katy Taul, first Jr. heifer calf, first summer heifer calf, first Jr. yearling, first 3-year-old cow, fourth aged cow; Katy also received Reserve Jr. Champion with Goldfawn John Whisper, her Junior Yearling.

Holstein: Dale Baker, third Jr. heifer calf, fifth Jr. yearling, seventh 4-year-old cow; Kelly Baker, fifth Jr. heifer calf, second intermediate heifer calf, fourth winter heifer calf, fifth Sr. 2-year-old cow; Bailey Brown, fifth intermediate heifer calf, second 3-year-old cow; Christopher Brown, sixth Jr. heifer calf; Brittnay George, eighth Jr. heifer calf, first intermediate heifer calf; Casey George, sixth Sr. heifer calf, second Jr. yearling heifer, first Sr. yearling heifer, third Sr. 2-year-old cow, fifth 3-year-old cow. Casey also received Reserve Jr. Champion with Hodgdale Dundee Madison, Jr. yearling heifer, and honorable mention with his Sr. yearling Miss-Long-Green Durham Isabella. Kalli Keen, first Jr. heifer calf, fourth intermediate heifer calf, second winter yearling heifer, third winter yearling, second Sr. 2-year-old cow, seventh 3-year-old cow. Jersey: Jessica Ardahl, fourth Jr. heifer calf, first 3-year-old cow; Quinton Keen, second Sr. heifer calf, second Sr. yearling, first Jr. 2-year-old cow. Quinton also received honorable mention Grand Champion with his Jr. 2-year-old cow, Dappleview Lady Loretta.
