BHS golfers take first at SFT
The Baldwin High School golf team swung its way to the top Tuesday afternoon at the Santa Fe Trail golf Invitational. The team was led by seniors Julian Fisher and Wayne Sage, as they recorded the lowest scores on the team with an 83 and 84, respectively. The team ended first out of 10 teams at the tournament.
The Bulldogs didn't come out with an outright victory though. The top four golfers from Baldwin and SFT tied at 339 strokes. The winner would be decided by adding the fifth and sixth place scores of each team to the total of the top four scores. Senior Justin Goff and junior Ben Elder were the fifth and sixth placers on the Bulldog squad. The two golfers recorded scores of 93 and 102, beating the two lowest placers on the SFT team, which had total scores of 103 and 105. The margin of victory for the Bulldogs came to 13 strokes.
"We won due to all members shooting well. It was a true team effort. I am very proud of each of the them. Great job guys," said head coach David Theis.
Sage led the team in the first round by shooting a 40, followed by Fisher with 42, Derek Couch finished his first round with a 43, and following him was senior Bubba Pahcoddy with a 44. It was Fisher who finished in the number one spot on the team with an overall score of 83, Sage was second, and Couch and Pahcoddy were behind them.
The top team honor wasn't the only honor the golfers received. The top four placers on the Bulldog team each got an individual honor. Fisher was a fourth place medalist, Sage received the sixth place medal, Pahcoddy was an eighth place medalist and Couch ended up being a ninth place medalist at the tournament.
The varsity golf team also finished the league tournament Saturday in Osawatomie. The Bulldogs ended up getting sixth out of 20 teams at the competition. Sage finished in eighth place as an individual, and medaled.
The varsity had a meet Monday, but results weren't available by press time.
