Gardner takes pair from BHS
There was plenty of pitching Thursday when the Baldwin High School softball team squared off against Gardner at home.
BHS pitchers Kasey Pittenger and Katie Martin put up good numbers, but Gardner countered with better. BHS fell in the doubleheader opener 3-1 on an extra-inning base hit. Pittenger went seven innings, gave up seven hits and struck out three. Gardner got all of its runs in the second game on a three-run homer that stood for a 3-0 win.
"We faced two quality pitchers from Gardner," said coach Ginny Honomichl. "We were competitive, especially in the first game."
There wasn't a lot of offense for the Bulldogs. In the opener, Martin went 2-for-3 and scored the lone run. In the second game, Mandi Daigh also went 2-for-3.
The twinbill left BHS with a 3-2 record for the season and Honomichl believes the team is coming around.
"We're happy to be 3-2," she said. "I felt like we sort of close in the first game with Gardner, but we came up short.
"I'd say our defensive assignments at the varsity level are set," she said. "Our batting order is still in trial. The coach hasn't figured it out yet."
It doesn't get easier for BHS this week, either. On Tuesday, the Bulldogs traveled to Spring Hill for a doubleheader, but results weren't available by press time. On Thursday, they're again on the road at Paola.
"It's going to be another tough week this week with Spring Hill and Paola," Honomichl said. "Those are quality programs and we need splits."
Next home action for BHS will be Tuesday against Louisburg at 4:30 p.m.
