BHS baseball has busy week
Another full schedule last week left the Baldwin High School baseball team with a split in one Frontier League doubleheader and a pair of losses from another.
After falling in the first game of a doubleheader 18-8 last Tuesday, BHS bounced back to win the second game 6-1 against Eudora High School in the first game played on Eudora's new field.
Senior Ryne Jackson pitched the first game of the double header. The game was reasonably close until the fourth inning when Eudora had a 10-run inning. After hitting a batter, Jackson was pulled and replaced by junior Brian Wendt.
"The first game was a little shaky, and it was a real slugfest. They had one big inning and we just folded," said junior Brian Turk.
Senior Cal Heinrich went 1-for-3 with a double in the game.
The second game went quite a bit better for the Bulldogs. Junior Andy Hannon started and finished the game, thowing a three-hitter.
"It was good that we could put the first game behind us and focus on the second game," said Turk.
"I was proud of how our kids competed," said coach Brian Ash. "We could have easily hung our heads after our first game. Andy Hannon was in a groove on the mound and our defense made all the plays."
Heinrich went 2-for-3 with a double, triple and two runs batted in, Turk went 1-for-3 with a triple and freshman Ryan Jorgenson went 1-for-3 with an RBI to help contribute to the win.
On Thursday, BHS took on Gardner and lost both games. In the opener, Gardner edged the Bulldogs 5-4 and in extra innings pulled out another one-run win, 7-6.
Rickey Woodbridge had four hits in the games, including a home run. Hannon went 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBIs and a home run in the opener. Grant Meisenheimer, who took the loss on the mound, went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Meisenheimer allowed just four hits and struck out six.
In the second game, Turk was 3-for-5 with two RBIs; Jackson was 2-for-5 with an RBI; and Heinrich had a home run.
The outcomes left the Bulldogs with a 2-4 record on the year. The Bulldogs' next games were at Spring Hill on Tuesday, but results weren't available by press time.
