Bulldogs split doubleheader with Ottawa

Special to the Signal

The lights of the Baldwin High School baseball fields were glowing Thursday night as the Bulldogs started their second baseball season in school history with a double-header against the Ottawa Cyclones.

Pitching the first game for the Bulldogs was senior Ryne Jackson. Jackson, with one home run and two runs batted in, contributed to the 13-11 come-from-behind win over the Cyclones. Senior Cal Heinrich and juniors Grant Meisenheimer and B.T. Turk also hit homers for the Bulldog s.

"I was proud of our team in the first game because we got down and would fight back, then get down again, and come right back with an answer. We never quit, and I was extremely proud of Ryne Jackson and the way he willed us to a victory with his pitc hing performance. It was a tough and gritty effort on his part," said coach Brian Ash.

Unfortunately the second game did not turn out as pleasant for the Bulldogs. With a loss of 19-0, the Cyclones owned the game. Starting pitcher was junior Andrew Hannon, who pitched 2 2/3 innings. From then on, the Bulldogs switched out pitchers three more times with juniors Grant Meisenheimer, Brain Wendt and freshman Ryan Jorgensen finishing off the game.

"I was proud of our team in how we came out and competed in the first game. The second game was as sloppy of a game that we could have possibly played. We did not come up with the routine plays that we needed to keep us in the game. Against a good team like Ottawa that spells disaster and the score was evident," said Ash.

"We need to work on getting better fundamentally. We had too many lazy flyballs and did not execute the way we needed to defensively. I think the bulk of this next week of practice will focus on the defensive side of the ball and just improv ing day to day. Every player contributed something positive in the games," said Ash

The Bulldogs have a week's rest before their next match up on April 15 against the Eudora Cardinals at Eudora and then again on April 17 against the Gardner-Edgerton Trail Blazers on the BHS home fields.
