City-wide garage sale set for this weekend

May 29, 2002

There are usually a few garage sales scattered around town during the weekends, but there will be a lot more than a few this weekend.

In fact, there could be at least 75 sales during Saturday's annual city-wide garage sale, which is sponsored by the Friends of the Baldwin City Public Library.

"People come from all around," said Susan Baker, president of the Friends of the Library. "They come from a wide variety of communities."

Baker said the city-wide garage sale, which runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., is a fundraiser for the Friend's of the Library. The money raised, she said, will go to help purchase summer reading program books and other items for the public library.

"Whatever they need," she said.

Directories that list all of the sales and their items are available at the library, 800 Seventh St., for $1 beginning at 8 a.m. A map of Baldwin and coupons for local businesses can also be found in the directories. Friends of the Library members can get their directories Friday evening.

She said there are a variety of items available at the sales.

"Everything from golf clubs and kids' bikes to computers and weight benches," she said.

Those that have registered their sales in the city-wide event will have their yards marked with signs. Baker said those having sales can pick up signs for their yards at the library Friday evening.

There will also be a bake sale at the library during the city-wide garage sale.

Baker said she recommends getting an early start Saturday, but not before 8 a.m.

"We have a hard time keeping people to hold off until 8," she said, "but we ask people to wait until the sale begins."
