The Baldwin School District will still be looking at ways to save even though the Kansas Legislature recently approved an increase in taxes that will give schools a $20 per pupil increase.
16,000 Thomas tickets expected to sell out

The countdown is on. In less than two weeks, Thomas the Tank Engine will rumble into town bringing with it with several thousand people. Around 12,500 of the 16,000 available tickets for Day Out With Thomas, which is June 7-9 and 14-16, have been sold to people in 20 states as far away as Nevada, Wyoming, Arizona, Georgia and New Jersey.
Baldwin sees need for increased safety

Baldwin’s population is growing every year, and with that comes the increased need for safety. “We’re not the same Baldwin we were 20 years ago,” Council Member George McCrary, chairman of the public safety committee, said. “It’s not the same little town that it was.”
Boys defend track championship

Going into the state track meet at Wichita State University, the Baldwin High School boys knew they had a job to do. If the Bulldogs continued to work as they had all season that job would result in a repeat as the Class 4A State Champions. By Saturday night the boys turned in their time cards to see if the work had paid off. The resume for the weekend included the following: 18 state medals; five first-place finishes; two new school records; and several other “firsts” for Baldwin High track. The completed work tallied a total of 73 points, 33 ahead of the nearest competitor. “It went even better than expected,” said coach Mike Spielman, who had predicted that team would score 69 points. “The seniors did the things they needed to do. It was a great way for them to go out.”
Bulldogs land 2 on first team all-league softball

Baldwin High School’s softball team placed a pair of first-teamers, three second-teamers and a pair of honorable mention selections on the Frontier League All-League team.
City-wide garage sale set for this weekend

There are usually a few garage sales scattered around town during the weekends, but there will be a lot more than a few this weekend. In fact, there could be at least 75 sales during Saturday’s annual city-wide garage sale, which is sponsored by the Friends of the Baldwin City Public Library.

At the state track and field meet at Wichita State University the Baldwin High School girls team continued to raise the bar like an always-improving high jumper as the Bulldogs had throughout the course of the 2002 season.
