Combine a backwoods girl, an ace marksman, a traveling wild west show and several Irving Berlin songs and the final product is this year’s Baldwin City Theatre’s musical. “Annie Get Your Gun,” the tale of Annie Oakley who joins Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show and falls in love with Frank Butler, the star of the traveling show, starts Friday and runs through next week.

African family visits Thomas
June 19, 2002
Some people traveled hundreds of miles and spent several hours in cars or airplanes to come to Baldwin and see Thomas the Tank Engine. Some even came as far away as Nevada, New Jersey and Arizona for the two-weekend event. But one family had a little farther to travel than anyone else through nine time zones to be exact. Bruce and Vivian Wellman and their two children, Luc, 2, and Leah, 1, made the trip from the Comoro Islands, located off the east coast of Africa near Madagascar. “We’re disappointed they didn’t have an award for the longest distance traveled,” Bruce Wellman joked before their ride on Thomas Friday morning. The family didn’t make the trip from the Southern Hemisphere just to attend Day Out With Thomas though.
City, school reach agreement on fees
June 19, 2002
The Baldwin City Council and the Baldwin School District have finally come to an agreement. After five weeks of debate, the city council approved permit and utility connection fees of $98,890 for the new elementary school and the Baldwin Junior High addition to be charged to the district in a 3-2 vote Monday night. Council Members Todd Cohen and Ted Brecheisen voted against the motion.
Thomas was priceless
June 19, 2002
There is no more “toot, toot, toot” from Thomas emanating from the Midland Railway Depot. I miss that. The six-day extravaganza out at the depot has been an absolute joy to watch. Anyone in Baldwin who didn’t take part, or at least drop by, drive by, anything, really missed something.

June 19, 2002
Will and Ben Knutson were so excited to see Thomas the Tank Engine, the brothers from Leawood slept in their Thomas engineer hats all night before wearing them to Day Out With Thomas the next day.
