It’s hot, it’s dry, that’s July. But, it can mean only one thing football is just around the corner. That’s evident by last week’s Youth Football Camp and this week’s version for Baldwin High School and Baldwin Junior High School football players.

Meeker convicted in Baldwin shooting

A second jury took just two hours Friday to reach the conclusion that a former Baldwin man was guilty of shooting his neighbor’s boyfriend. Stephen Meeker, 35, could be sentenced to as many as 41 months in prison for aggravated battery in the Oct. 14 shooting outside his former home in the 1200 block of Bison Court.
Butell resigns as Baldwin police chief

Steve Butell resigned as Baldwin City Police Chief Friday. City officials declined to comment on the reason for the resignation and attempts to contact Butell were unsuccessful.
Local artist’s watercolor wins contest

Linda Everett has only been painting watercolors for about four years and had never entered an art contest until just a few weeks ago. She had a pretty good feeling that she wasn’t going to win the Association of Community Arts Agencies of Kansas postcard contest, but she wanted to enter anyway. “I wasn’t planning on winning, it was just a great experience,” Everett said. “I thought I have nothing to lose, so I’m just going to go for it.” She didn’t lose. In fact, Everett’s watercolor, a still life titled “Yesteryear,” was selected as one of 16 winners in the final year for the 25-year-long ACAAK postcard contest.
