BHS wrestlers open second season

Baldwin High School’s wrestling team opened the 2002 portion of its schedule with a win over Wellsville in a dual and a seventh-place finish in the Rossville tournament. BHS topped Wellsville 51-22, but only six matches were wrestled. The others were forfeits. Saturday’s tourney in Rossville proved to be a challenge.
Softball clinic offered in Eudora

The Eudora Recreation Commission will sponsor a five-week softball pitching clinic for pitchers ages 8-18.
Baker women win, while men tumble

Baker University’s basketball teams opened up the 2002 portion of the season at home Saturday by splitting a pair of games. The Baker women opened with a 60-47 win over Missouri Valley, while the men fell 79-69.
BJHS seventh graders take second at Wellsville

The Baldwin Junior High School seventh graders opened the season off right with a 55-23 win over arch-rival Wellsville Saturday, but then fell in the finals of the Wellsville Tournament to Gardner by 46-20 score.

Anita Faddis, Family and Consumer Sciences instructor at Baldwin High School, has assumed the position of president of the Kansas Association for Career and Technical Education (K-ACTE) for 2001-2002.

There’s a new place to eat in Baldwin City. Mr. Goodcents, 912 Ames St., opened a little more than a week ago in the newly developed FireTree Plaza.
Council votes not to release Bennett Report

The public will not be seeing the Bennett Report anytime soon. A motion to release a section of the Bennett Report failed Monday night at the Baldwin City Council meeting by a 2-3 vote, with Council Members George McCrary, Ted Brecheisen Jr. and Marilyn Pearse voting against.

Up until now, the concept of year-round school in Baldwin City has only been in the nightmares of students. But the idea of year-round school is actually becoming more of a reality for the school district.

A house in the 400 block of Eighth Street was moved to an unknown location Tuesday. The house was recently sold by the Alpha Chi Omega sorority house, which is just to the north. The sorority palns to maintain the lot as part of its lawn.

Winter can affect water lines

Even though Baldwin City’s Arctic cold spell seems to have ended for the time, temperatures are sure to drop back down below the freezing point before winter’s end. When that happens, it is possible Baldwin could see a couple of water line breaks, Assistant Utility Director Bill Winegar said.

A bad shooting night is probably the worst thing that can happen to a basketball team. That’s what happened to Baldwin High School Friday, when the Paola Panthers took advantage for a 52-35 win here.
MSES earns state award

Marion Springs Elementary School has been recognized for having attained the Standard of Excellence on state-wide assessments in reading. MSES recently received a certificate from the State Board of Education in recognition of its accomplishment.
BHS girls blast past Paola

For a quarter, it was close. But from there, the Baldwin High School girls hung a heavy 48-34 loss on Paola here Friday night to remain unbeaten in league play and show that the New Year has at least one resolution holding firm.
