BJHS sees teams improve records
February 13, 2002
The Baldwin Junior High School basketball teams both improved their records in recent action. The eighth graders downed Olathe Christian 67-33 and the seventh graders won 46-34. The eighth graders topped Perry-Lecompton 55-52 while the seventh graders edged out a 36-35 win.
Baker women win, while men fall in OT

Baker University’s women had a good night against Benedictine here Saturday, pounding out a 71-55 victory. The Baker men almost followed suit, but finally fell 94-93 in double overtime.
BHS girls tune up for showdown

There were a couple of easy games for the Baldwin High School girls this past week, but the real test was Tuesday night. BHS’s Bulldogs mopped the court with Eudora Friday night, 73-38, on King and Queen of Courts night. The Bulldogs followed that up with a 60-48 win over Gardner Monday in a weather-postponed make up game that wasn’t as close as the score indicates.
BHS bops Cards in dramatic fashion

A packed King and Queen of Courts crowd exploded into wild celebration here Friday night as Baldwin High School junior Joe Gipp hit a last-second layup that sealed a dramatic, come-from-behind 55-54 win over the Eudora Cardinals and sealed a complete six-game sweep.
Vinland student crowned county spelling bee champ

The third time was a charm for 11-year-old Marianne Sansom. The Vinland Elementary fifth-grader successfully spelled “selenian” and took the title Saturday of the 2002 Douglas County Spelling Bee at St. John’s School.

There’s still some hope for Rainbow Preschool. The Baldwin Board of Education heard a proposal Monday night that would allow the local preschool to move into the Baldwin Elementary School.

1929 BHS graduates live together at Vintage Park
February 13, 2002
They graduated together as high school seniors. Now, 73 years later, the trio is together once again, not as high school seniors, but as senior citizens. Oscar Turner, Hazel Kapelle and Dorothy Barnthouse, all 1929 Baldwin High School graduates, currently live together at Vintage Park. Even though each one has led a different life in different places, all three of them still remember their days together in high school.
