2002 was the year for state at BHS

December 31, 2002

When the year 2002 is recalled, it will always include the word state. There was never a year for Baldwin High School sports where that term applied in one way or another by almost every team.

That's also why BHS dominated the top sports stories of the year in Baldwin. First there was the Class 4A state title won by BHS heavyweight wrestler Witt Hinton in February. Second was the Class 4A crown earned by the Bulldog boys track team in May. The hat trick was cross country, but it included both the boys and girls for the first time ever.

Those are easily the top stories, but there were a host of other BHS teams that went to state. The Bulldog football team made its first state playoff appearance since 1993. The Bulldog volleyball team also qualified for state for the first time since 1972. Bulldog tennis players also made the trip to state and for the girls, they played host to Class 4A state this year, although Lawrence tennis courts were used because it was Maple Leaf Festival weekend in Baldwin.

Baker University's top sports story was an easy pick. The Wildcat mens soccer team qualified for the national tournament for the first time ever.
