Memorial services for George Malicky, 97, Baldwin City, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church, Baldwin City. Mr. Malicky died Aug. 23, 2002, at the Baldwin Care Center. Private family burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery, Baldwin City.
He was born Feb. 24, 1905, at Barneston, Neb., the eldest child of John and Lizzy (Chadima) Malicky. He signed with Connie Mack's Athletes at the age of 18 and played for nine years in professional leagues. His ball playing ability kept him employed during the Depression when he found work in the oil fields in Texas while doubling as Player/Manager for oil company baseball teams.
He married Ethel Reed Nov. 23, 1932. She died March 20, 2001. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Baldwin City, where he was head usher for many years. The Malickys were Grand Marshals of the Maple Leaf Festival Parade in 1997.
Mr. Malicky was elected as an Honorary Alumnus of Baker University, and as an honorary member of Delta Tau Delta.
Survivors include three children: Georgann Raney and her husband, John, Beaumont, Texas; Neal Malicky, and his wife, Margi, Lawrence; Joyce Castel, Lawrence; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and one sister, Gladys Riggs, Houston, Texas.
The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lamb-Roberts-Heise Funeral home. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Baldwin City, and sent in care of Lamb-Roberts-Heise Funeral Home, PO Box 64, Baldwin City, KS 66006.
