K-State student learns
first-hand in Belize

Beth Schild, a Kansas State University student, has been in Punta Gorda, Belize, Central America, with the K-State Community Service Program. Schild and two other K-State students are helping develop projects with Toledo Community College in Punta Gorda. They will be teaching math, science and English in the summer program. Schild is the daughter of Ray and Linda Schild, Baldwin City.

Ives Chapel UMW to
have August meeting

Ives Chapel United Methodist Women will meet Wed., Aug. 21, in Fellowship Hall at 8:30 a.m. for breakfast. Devotions by Dolores Kalb and the general business meeting will follow.

for craft fair

The Lawrence Senior Center, 745 Vermont, is accepting registrations for the Fall Arts and Crafts Fair on Oct. 26. Contact (785) 842-0543 for forms and information. Deadline is Sept. 6.

Gospel music artists
appear in Wellsville

Gospel music recording artists, Phil and Pam Morgan, will perform in Wellsville Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Fifth and Main streets. The performance is part of their national "Living Proof" ministry.

Local student attends
NSLC conference

Dennis Craig, class of 2003 at Baldwin High School, recently attended the National Student Leadership Conference on Mastering Leadership, an leadership development program for outstanding high school students. While attending the NSLC, Dennis had the opportunity to study, experience and develop skills and traits that define and identify a leader. This six-day program helps students develop their abilities to think on their feet, to engage in critical analysis and to communicate effectively skills that will serve them as leaders in high school, college and throughout their lives.

Special guest speakers add a sense of reality and bring current issues to life. Guest speakers from previous years include: U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige, former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, former Attorney General Janet Reno, President of the World Bank James D. Wolfensohn, Supreme Court Justices Anthony Kennedy, Sandra Day O'Connor and David Souter.

reunion changed

BHS class of 1982 ... We have changed the location of our 20-year class reunion. It's now at 7 p.m. on Aug. 24 at Johnny's Tavern in North Lawrence. The picnic and school tour have been cancelled. Local students earn
distinction at WSU

Wichita State University has announced the names of more than 1,000 students who were on the WSU dean's honor roll for Spring 2002.

Stephanie Hope Jarvis, Baldwin City, made the dean's honor roll.

To be included on the dean's honor roll, a student must be enrolled full-time (at least 12 credit hours) and earn at least a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

Bert Nash offers
parenting classes

The Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center offers parenting classes through a seven-week course called Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP).

Classes meet from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays of each session. The next available STEP sessions are: Sept. 4-Oct. 16, Jan. 8-Feb. 19, 2003, and May 7-June 18, 2003. Call Laura Witt, STEP coordinator, at (785) 830-3420 for more information or to sign up.
