Armed robbery occurs at Baldwin business

April 29, 2002

A local business owner was robbed at gun point Friday night.

According to Sgt. Colleen Larson of the Baldwin City Police Department, Gary Craig was preparing to close J's Video, 814 High St., just before 10 p.m. Friday when a black man wearing a nylon stocking over his face entered the business and pointed a gun, believed to be a semiautomatic pistol, at the owner.

"All he said was 'Give me all your money,'" Larson said.

The suspect, described as being of medium height and build and believed to be in his 20s, took between $350-400 Craig was in the process of counting, she said, before he left the business.

Two other armed robberies occurred in Lawrence early Saturday morning, and Larson said police department will be working with Lawrence police to see if they are connected to the Baldwin robbery.

She said the robbery was the first of its kind in Baldwin.

"Nothing like this has happened in Baldwin," Larson said. "I think it's maybe random in a sense."

Even though she said she believes it was a random occurrence, business owners should take safety measures.

"Try to take as many precautions when closing as possible," she said.
