Signal wins big in KPA contest
It was time for a repeat for the Baldwin City Signal at the Kansas Press Association's Annual Convention in Wichita Saturday. For the second year in a row, the Signal won the sweepstakes award in its division.
The sweepstakes award goes to each paper in its division that scores the most points in the contest. This year, the Signal had five first-place finishes, five second places, 10 third places and three honorable mentions.
"We're thrilled to have won the sweepstakes award again," said Jeff Myrick, Signal editor/publisher. "It's proof that we are providing the best possible newspaper we can to our readers and advertisers."
First-place awards went to Myrick for editorial writing (Police probe answers needed), sports feature writing (Black has eventful overseas trip) and special section (Maple Leaf Festival). Don Gladhart won first in sports photography (It was time for a quick start). Also judged as best in the division was the Signal's Web site at www.baldwincity.com.
"I was really pleased for Don to win," said Myrick. "He's one of several photographers that shoot pictures for us on their own. It was good to see one of them win with one of their submitted shots. It's contributions like that from people in town that help make the Signal what it is.
"I was also happy that our Web site was recognized," he said. "There's a lot of work that goes into that and I know it's been extremely popular. The traffic we have at the site is phenomenal and people are especially fond of SpeakOut!, our on-line community forum."
Myrick also pointed to the efforts of Kristen Dymacek, Signal staff writer, as important to winning sweepstakes again. Dymacek had two individual second-place finishes (feature writing and youth coverage) and a pair of third-place finishes (feature photography and photo package).
"Kristen has been a great addition to the staff," said Myrick. "To place like that in her first year shows real talent. Of course a big thank you also goes to our office manager, Karen Wooge, who keeps us both going."
