Shooting case returns to court
A man charged in last October's Baldwin shooting is scheduled to go before a jury for a second time.
Former Baldwin resident Stephen Meeker, 35, will return to court July 10 because a Douglas County jury deliberated for eight hours and was unable to decide if he was guilty of aggravated battery, aggravated assault and attempted aggravated battery last month.
Meeker is accused of shooting Steven Swafford, 31, Lawrence, on Oct. 14 after a long-standing neighborhood dispute.
Douglas County Assistant Dist. Atty. Dan Dunbar said he will ask that Meeker's attorney, Jim Rumsey, recuse himself from the case for testifying in the initial six-day trial. A hearing on that motion was set by Judge Jack Murphy for 11 a.m. May 6.
