Big day for BU track
Baker University placed first in nine different events at the Friends University Invitational Saturday in Wichita and took the top two spots in four of those events.
Three women, seniors Liesel Kirk and Renee Sudduth and freshman Karly Brandt, won gold medals. Kirk won the 5,000-meter run by 29 seconds with a time of 18:53. Sudduth's mark of 145-3 in the hammer throw took first place by 14-7. Brandt took first in the long jump with a leap of 16-3.75.
Junior Jerry Baker won two events, the javelin and pole vault. After winning the pole vault by a foot with a height of 14-6, Baker edged senior Eric Schwarz by two inches in the javelin with a distance of 188-0.
Seniors Scott Rieger and David Buckley won the discus and hammer throw, respectively, with marks of 143-8 and 148-9. Each won their event by over six feet.
Sophomore Matt Hallauer took first in his first 10,000-meter run by 91 seconds with a time of 33:31. The 4x400-meter relay team of seniors Levi Broeckelman, Matt Neal and Toby Leach and junior JerryBaker finished in 3:27.00 to take first.
Baker hosted the high school Baker Relays Tuesday. The Wildcats next meet will be a dual meet with Ottawa University on Saturday at Hey-Metzger Track. The meet will replace the Baker Relays.
