Athletic club opens doors

September 26, 2001

Baldwin City's first full-service athletic club is nearing completion.

"To get us functioning at 100 percent, it will take about two to three weeks," said owner George McCrary. "As the construction closes down, the workouts will increase."

But just because the workouts have yet to begin, doesn't mean the Baldwin Athletic Club isn't open for business.

In fact, the Baldwin Athletic Club, at Tenth Street and U.S. Highway 56, opened its doors Monday.

"People are allowed to come in and see the equipment and sign up for a membership," McCrary said. "So right now, it's kind of a soft opening."

Once the Baldwin Athletic Club is completely open, McCrary said it will be staffed 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. But members will also have access to the club 24 hours a day, seven days a week with a five-digit membership code.

"The number one reason people say they don't work out is because they are limited on time," he said. "We'll eliminate that. All I'm asking is that people commit three to five hours a week, at any time during the week."

The club, which has free weights, a cardio circuit, a fitness center, steam and sauna for both men and women and a therapeutic swimming pool, will also offer APEX programs including weight loss and total nutrition programs.

"I'm going to do my best to educate people to come in and take advantage of what we have," McCrary said.

Memberships start at $39 a month per person for a 12-month commitment. There are also membership packages for couples, families and seniors. There will be an open house Oct. 27 for people who want a closer look at the club once it's up and running.

"There are no promotions, no gimmicks," he said. "We're just here to provide a service."

He said people will be impressed with the amount and quality of services the Baldwin Athletic Club provides.

"People are just going to be overwhelmed with the equipment," McCrary said. "Everything that everybody's used to, this is a step up from that. There's not another club like this in the nation."
