BHS girls take third
Baldwin High School's girls cross country team ran the race of its life to finish third at the Class 4A State Championship in Wamego Saturday.
BHS was third behind Andover's 66 points and El Dorado's 90 with 107 points. Coach Mike Spielman was pleased with that performance.
"They ran unbelievably," said Spielman. "We knew going into it that Andover and El Dorado were good. They had beaten us several times this year. But there was a group of about six that could finish third and we finished 40 points ahead of the fourth-place team.
"I was really proud of the girls," he said. "They really came together."
Sophomore Eric Ogle led the way with a ninth-place finishing time of 12:40.75. Junior Kayla Pringle was also in the top 20, finishing 19th at 12:53.83.
Other BHS finishes were: Abby Hofmeier, 33rd, 13:15.41; Michelle Pressgrove, 41st, 13:24.43; Missy Westgate, 47th, 13:31.49; Nicki Frerking, 68th, 13:52.76; and Leah Clay, 85th, 14:19.87. The lone senior in the group is Frerking, so Spielman is looking forward to next year.
"We're looking forward to making a charge and getting some of those team next year," he said.
