Anthem captures festival crowd

For the first time in Maple Leaf Festival history, Saturday’s crowd of thousands grew completely silent. At 10:59 a.m., just before the grand parade rolled through the intersection of Eighth and High streets Saturday morning, the only voice that could be heard was Jocelyn Leonard’s as she sang the National Anthem. “Once the words started coming out, there was a total lack of movement from everybody,” Ron Nelson, festival announcer, said. “There was absolutely not a muscle moving. There was just total, total silence.” Nelson said he had heard that the crowd’s silence during the singing stretched down to the ends of both Eighth and High Streets.
