Melodrama will entertain with ‘Heaven Help the …’
Several Baldwin residents will be featured in this year's Maple Leaf Melodrama production, "Heaven Help the Po' Taters."
Co-director Susan Pouliot said a majority of the 22-member cast is from Baldwin.
Shane Goldring plays the villain and Dawn Grammer plays the villainess. Sarah Swan and Daniel Bone, both from Lawrence, play the heroine and the hero.
In this comedic production, the villain has dammed the town's water so the potatoes can't grow. It's up to the hero and the heroine to save the potatoes and defeat the villain at the same time.
"It's really quite funny," Pouliot said. "It's definitely a comedy, all right."
The cast has been working on the melodrama since the beginning of September.
"The kids have put a lot of work into it," Pouliot said. "A lot more has gone into it than last year and it's well worth coming to see."
The production, which lasts a little more than an hour, is Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 1, 4 and 7 p.m. and Sunday at 1 and 4 p.m. All shows will be under the big tent at Seventh and Grove streets.
Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under. Children three and under will be admitted free.
Pouliot said the show has been popular the past few years.
"It's so much fun to see an old fashioned melodrama," she said. "There's a lot of interaction and it's lots of fun. I think that's why people keep returning."
